Due to limited information concerning to vinasse treatment, a low cost and low complexity technique, developed for sewage treatment, was implemented and assessed for efficient treatment of the studied waste. Thus, two laboratory scale SBR reactors, using activated sludge with ECOPAC®200 microorganisms’ growths, were built and put in operation. One for vinasse treatment, while the other, operating in same conditions with synthetic water, as scientific control for sustain the correct operation of the technique. Vinasse was supplied by a sugar mill located in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, meanwhile the experiment was set in the Environmental Engineering lab of the El Bosque university at Bogotá, Colombia. During the process, the following parameters were monitored: electric conductivity (EC), solids (TDS, TS, TSS), nitrites, nitrates, turbidity, color, COD, dissolved oxygen (DO), and pH; aiming to answer: why are SBR reactors a worthwhile alternative for vinasse treatment, and for improve its physical and chemical parameters? As results, was obtained a reduction of: EC 23,88 %; TDS 22,07 %; TS 76,48 %; TSS 72,42 %; nitrites 100 %; nitrates 100 %; turbidity 18,88 %; color 18,77 % y COD 11,62 %. Further, was obtained an increase in DO of 25,81 %, whereas pH maintains equal in 3,8 during the experimental period. Whereas, data where not representative in the vinasse indicating SBR technology not suitable enough for this waste treatment, since high quantity of organic material produce it is inapplicability. Nevertheless, this investigation achieves to broad the information applied to Colombian context in matters of environmental health and commitment from industries to it; resolving vinasse-related problems through easily attainable techniques on a larger scale.
