Introduction: The global burden of disease is an indicator developed to address 3 main problems: Incorporating non-fatal conditions into the health status, producing objective assessments of said health status, measuring the cost-effectiveness of health interventions for adequate resource management. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the colon that causes continuous inflammation of the mucosa extending from the proximal colon to the rectum with certain variations. The etiology of ulcerative colitis remains a matter of debate. However, evidence suggests that it has an autoimmune component. The estimated cost of ulcerative colitis in the United States may vary between 8.1 and 14.9 billion dollars. In Colombia there are reports of the prevalence of the disease, however the burden of this disease in the Colombian population is not described. Objectives: This study aims to estimate the disease burden of ulcerative colitis in Colombia during the years 2010 to 2020 disaggregated by age groups. Methodology: It is a disease burden study. To estimate the prevalence, a search was carried out through the SISPRO records based on the information stored in the Individual Registry of Health Services Provision (RIPS) system. DALYs were estimated from the sum of YLL and YLD according to the methodology proposed by the WHO in 2013. Results: The annual prevalence of ulcerative colitis was 8 to 26 x 100,000 inhabitants and this increases with age, with the age group from 70 to 79 being the highest. The mortality rate reaches up to 0.2 x 100,000 inhabitants where an increase in the mortality rate with age is also evident, mainly in those over 80 years of age. Regarding DALYs, they comply with the same trend where age is directly proportional to disability-adjusted life years. Conclusion: In Colombia, the disease burden for Ulcerative Colitis, during the study period 2010 to 2020, shows an irregular trend with respect to DALYs, the number of DALYs increases chronologically with age.
