At the beginning of this new millennium it was the 50th anniversary of critical care created as a new medical specialty. Bjorn Ibsen started in Copenhagen in 1952 what can today be said to be the first ICU, set up to provide ventilation support to patients with respiratory insufficiency secondary to poliomyelitis. The complications at that time were the same as now: infection, lack of hydroelectrolytic balance, hemodynamic instability, and pulmonary lesions, known today as adult respiratory distress syndrome. Those were times when the leader of the multidisciplinary team almost always was an anesthesiologist [ 1 ]. Today, critical care is provided by physicians from different specialties: anesthesiology, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and critical care specialists. The health care model in this specialty from the beginning has been characterized by teamwork in which the cooperation, information, and monitoring data analysis involve physicians from all specialties, nurses, physical therapists, and pharmacologists, among others.eng
