Abstract

When I started my career, I had a very clear objective: to finish it with a consolidated project that would allow me to think about a professional future, within the framework of Hip Hop culture. Now that I am coming to the end, I see that objective almost completely fulfilled, but the thirst for knowledge takes me a step forward, that is why I want to appropriate new harmonic, rhythmic and even sociocultural perspectives to my compositional language, which offer me a deeper control of both the hip-hop style and how to apply modern harmonies to it, as well as its context and social impact. The objective of this project is to create three compositions based on the harmonic study extracted from harmonized works or composed by Robert Glasper and the rhythmic study from J Dilla. The result of this research comes through the harmonic transcription and rhythmic analysis of works made by both referents. The songs will be taken to the loop and the behavior of the electric bass as a harmonic and percussive instrument will be analyzed, thus promoting the compositional ideas that lead to the finalization of the objective product, it is important to clarify that these works will have improvisation as an additional component, as a form of pay homage to the two genres and the language that is manifested in it. The result of this investigation is a concert where Abril, Para-cosesos and TAL are the protagonists. They are born through exploration with the loop and the bass as protagonists of the sound planes generated. It is worth noting that no composition is going to sound the same twice in a row, since improvisation is a fundamental part in the construction of objective themes. There are few references that explore the bass as a harmonic and percussive instrument, since its traditional function is to accompany the base to generate a cushion that supports the rest of the instruments, however the contribution that study gives to my compositional language harmonic performed, opens new paths for the creation of future works and opens up new technical possibilities for their learning. It also sets a precedent for hip-hop, opening a path within the academy, which allows it to be included as a way to acquire specialized harmonic knowledge.
