dc.description.abstractenglish | Background: Different published studies have analyzed cleft lip and palate patients' biological, aesthetic, and psychological perceptions. Likewise, different authors have worked on developmental alterations. However, there is little information about parents' perceptions of their children's school, social and communicative development with cleft lip and/or palate, and the treatment they receive. This perception is important because parents are fundamental in the development and evolution of their children's treatment, and the treatment's long-term success depends largely on them. Aim: To evaluate the perception of parents/primary caregivers on the speech, language, communication, socialization, orofacial functions, and school development of their children between 6 and 8 years of age with cleft lip and/or palate. Materials: The survey was carried out in person at FISULAB, at face-to-face appointments with parents/caregivers of children with CLP, and virtually, the survey was sent to the cell phones of parents who could not attend said appointments. The ethics committee previously approved the study, and informed consent was signed. The domains included in the survey were language (comprehension and expression), socialization, speech (articulation, resonance, intelligibility, acceptability), orofacial functions (swallowing, mastication, habits), and school performance. Methods: The study included 18 participants and followed a 4-step methodology. 1) case selection; 2) face-to-face and virtual interviews; 3) data collection; 4) result analysis. Results: In terms of language comprehension, very positive results indicate that children have a good understanding of grammar and language structure (83.3%). In socialization, most children exhibit a high level of competitiveness (55.6%), which can be a positive characteristic of motivation and performance in both academic and recreational activities. The study revealed the areas where the greatest difficulties are found in the children's lives (speech, orofacial functions). Regarding speech, a large percentage of respondents indicate that when speaking, their children mention words that sound strange or different (66.7%), which may indicate the need for additional support in developing speech and articulation. Regarding orofacial functions, more than half of the respondents (55.6%) indicate that their children do not keep their mouths closed while quietly performing an activity during the day or night. They almost always snore (22.2%), which may indicate more serious problems such as a respiratory disorder. Conclusion: It is important to work in an interdisciplinary team that includes parents to address the different problems that affect the lives of children with CLP. An early approach maintained throughout their lives and with their closest core is essential for them to develop and integrate into society.
