Compassion from the Buddhist perspective is understood as the act of pursuing the alleviation of both suffering as well of the causes by which others suffer. Together with relational autonomy, the capability that individuals manifest as socially aware agents, it articulates a conceptual frame to promote the humanizing of health care in palliative care at the end of life. Relational autonomy and Buddhist compassion, when cohesively combined, promote the expression of agency from a place of recognizing oneself and the other, resounding with the rest and the surroundings to generate a responsiveness that encourages decision making upon the social bonds and values of patients in palliative care at the end of life. Relational autonomy is frequently criticized for its difficult to practice, but compassion offers it an avenue towards becoming a practical reality. On the other hand, relational autonomy facilitates empathy, the first step in the compassionate action. Compassion from the Buddhist ethics may convert in action relational autonomy. Bioethics and clinical professions could make of relational autonomy, articulated with compassion, a study field to promote the practical application of relational autonomy. A lay, pluri and transdisciplinary bioethics, in conjunction with secular Buddhism could favor this practice from a confluent optic of relational and Buddhist ethics, a proposal from relational compassion as a bioethical practice.
