The aim of this paper is to analyze some essentialist theses about the problem of natural kinds, particularly, Kripke’s semantic and metaphysical theses, which claim that there are natural kinds with essences scientifically discovered. The arguments presented in this paper begin by considering the scientific practice of chemistry and the developments of philosophy of chemistry. As a positive thesis contribution to the problem of natural kinds in chemistry, this paper aims to defend the viability of an alternative approach to essentialism without having to embrace any conventionalism: a Kantian-rooted ontolo-gical pluralism.eng
