dc.description.abstractDesde tiempos remotos, las historias sobre mundos y seres maravillosos han poblado la infatigable imaginación de los hombres. Las encontramos en la Odisea de Homero, en los relatos de Las mil y una noches, en el Popol Vuh, en los entrañables cuentos de hadas recopilados por los hermanos Grimm. Tal recurrencia de lo maravilloso en las narraciones y leyendas de culturas tan diversas revela un aspecto muy particular de la condición humana: nuestra necesidad fundamental de relatar, de explicar mediante la narración el insondable misterio de existir. Ofrecemos en este segundo volumen de la Colección Entre Letras una selección de ejemplos del género. Empezamos con un texto de uno de los maestros indiscutibles del relato fantástico y de horror, el norteamericano Edgar Allan Poe: “Berenice”, que presenta los extraños sucesos ocurridos en una lúgubre mansión en donde un hombre, enfermizo y nervioso, convive con su prima. En segundo lugar, tenemos “¿Quién sabe?”, de Guy de Maupassant; aquí el personaje principal es un hombre con tendencia a la locura y la misantropía que experimenta un acontecimiento perturbador en su propia morada. El tercer cuento, “La noche boca arriba”, de Julio Cortázar, retoma un procedimiento argumental que es típico en esta clase de literatura: la confusión entre la realidad y el sueño. Finalmente, como punto de cierre, está “Jardín de senderos que se bifurcan”, de Jorge Luis Borges. dc.description.abstractenglishFrom ancient times, stories about worlds and wonderful beings have been present in the indefatigable imagination of men. We find them in Homer's Odyssey, in the stories of The Thousand and One Nights, in the Popol Vuh, in the endearing fairy tales collected by the Grimm brothers. Such recurrence of the wonderful in the narratives and legends of such diverse cultures reveals a very particular aspect of the human condition: our fundamental need to relate, to explain through narration the unfathomable mystery of existing. We offer in this second volume of the Entre Letras Collection a selection of examples of the genre. We begin with a text by one of the undisputed masters of the fantastic and horror story, the American Edgar Allan Poe: "Berenice", which presents the strange events that occurred in a gloomy mansion where a man, sick and nervous, lives with his cousin. Secondly, we have “Who knows?”, by Guy de Maupassant. Here the main character is a man prone to madness and misanthropy who experiences a disturbing event in his own abode. The third story, "The night face up", by Julio Cortázar, takes up an argumentative procedure that is typical in this kind of literature: the confusion between reality and dreams. Finally, as a closing point, we "The Garden of forking paths", by Jorge Luis Borges. Like many of his fictions, this tale is a fascinating combination of a police tale, a fantastic tale, and a metaphysical game.eng
