Abstract
A common denominator in systems engineering programs, is the disconnection between mathematics and science with the general professional guideline, circularly proposed for their students. To reduce the existing gap, we designed, developed and implemented an Applied Mathematics course at Universidad El Bosque, Colombia, aiming to educate our students on deciding when to apply analytical tools based on mathematics or physics of Descartes, Leibniz and Newton, or when to apply, instead, other mathematical and scientific tools best suited to address complex environments, where information systems are to be developed and deployed. This paper describes the purpose, the focus and the students’ perception, corresponding to the course’s development and the topics covered in it, supplementing them with relative findings per the role it exposes within the academic curriculum.
