dc.description.abstractEn la historia de la medicina, el cáncer tiene un capítulo especial, esta enfermedad, que se ha considerado incurable desde sus primeras descripciones en la Grecia clásica ha evolucionado con el paso de los años, así como también lo ha hecho su tratamiento. El cáncer es una única enfermedad, pero se han descrito más de 200 tipos. En términos generales esta patología implica la ausencia de mecanismos de autolimitación celular que conllevan a una proliferación de células inmaduras o el crecimiento acelerado de tumores, que pueden ser benignos o malignos, la diferencia se encuentra en las características microscópicas de las células y su capacidad de viajar a órganos vecinos y crear siembras en ellos. El argumento de esta reflexión bioética está enfocado en las diferentes concepciones que tienen los seres humanos cuando reciben un dictamen médico que lleva explícitamente la palabra “Cáncer” y cómo eso afecta o modifica su autonomía y dignidad. Para dicho fin se expone inicialmente el contexto histórico de la temática basándose en las éticas griegas y descripciones de la época antigua, seguido de un breve recorrido a través de los siglos más representativos y las estadísticas actuales, y finalmente, evocando la narrativa de un paciente ficticio creado a partir de la confluencia de distintos relatos de pacientes reales en medio de su tratamiento oncológico, que dejan entrever a través de una postura optimista, el mismo temor y angustia originado en el momento de su diagnóstico inicial. Todo lo anterior desemboca en un análisis bioético a la luz de unos conceptos esenciales como la autonomía, la dignidad y la vulnerabilidad humanas, aspectos que participan en la toma de decisiones consciente e informada y la construcción de la percepción de vida buena.spa
dc.description.abstractenglishIn the history of medicine, cancer have an special chapter. This disease, which has been considered incurable since its first descriptions in classical Greece, has evolved over the years, as its treatment. Cancer is a single disease, but more than 200 types have been described. In general terms, this pathology implies the absence of cellular self-limiting mechanisms that lead to a proliferation of immature cells or the accelerated growth of tumors, which can be benign or malignant, the difference is found in the microscopic characteristics of the cells and their ability to travel to neighboring organs and create seeds in them. The argument of this bioethical reflection is focused on the different conceptions that human beings have when they receive a medical opinion that explicitly contains the word "Cancer" and how this affects or modifies their autonomy and dignity. For this purpose, the historical context of the subject is initially exposed based on Greek ethics and descriptions of ancient times, followed by a brief tour through the most representative centuries and current statistics, and finally, evoking the narrative of a fictional patient created from the confluence of different stories of real patients in the midst of their cancer treatment, which reveal through an optimistic posture, the same fear and anguish originated at the time of their initial diagnosis. All of the above leads to a bioethical analysis in the light of essential concepts such as autonomy, dignity and human vulnerability, aspects that participate in conscious and informed decision-making and the construction of the perception of a good life.eng
