Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the pediatric population generates approximately 500,000 visits to the emergency department in the United States, its incidence in developed countries is 75-125 cases/100,000 children per year (1, 2), with an associated cost of close to one billion dollars, thus generating large expenses for the health system (1). Among the etiologies of TBI is abusive head trauma (TCA), which is defined by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as an injury to the skull and intracranial contents as a result of force inflicted by an aggressor (3,4). This type of trauma is considered the main cause of mortality and permanent disability in pediatrics and represents a diagnostic challenge given that its signs and symptoms are nonspecific and may not be related to other injuries suggestive of abuse (5).
