The teaching of science must incorporate pedagogical innovations that promote the comprehensive education of students in basic education, facilitating the development of scientific thinking and soft skills in line with the overall objectives of the area. For these innovation processes to be successful in the medium and long term, it is essential to have research that provides detailed contextual information. This study aimed to analyze the experiences of a group of 32 tenth-grade students from I.E. Ciudad Mocoa, in relation to the type of social interaction that arises in a cooperative classroom environment based on the SCALE-UP model. This case study used participant observation and focus groups as qualitative research methods to achieve a detailed and contextualized understanding of the experiences from the students' perspectives. It was found that the students' social interaction followed a predominantly independent interaction pattern. This dynamic hindered the development of positive interdependence, which is a fundamental requirement for cooperative learning to be truly effective. This highlights the need to adjust the model for its implementation in this context and to consider it as a learning strategy that can address the challenges the institution faces regarding educational quality.
