New Essays in Ethics and Feminist Philosophy”
Female genital mutilation or female circumcision describes a set of practices aimed at altering, removing, and/or manipulating the external female genitalia, usually of girls and young women, without medical purposes. It is a practice that remains prevalent, especially in African countries, but also in some parts of Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Similarly, cases have been described in indigenous communities in Colombia. This argumentative essay demonstrates that the practice of female genital mutilation is a form of pathogenic vulnerability expression according to the taxonomy of vulnerability proposed by Catriona Mackenzie in her work “Vulnerability: New Essays in Ethics and Feminist Philosophy.”
