Introduction: The chin is a prominent facial structure of our profile, thus being crucial for our appearance, so correcting its malformations is very important and its tissue may be used to treat other dentofacial anomalies. There are multiple current techniques for this purpose. Objective: to describe the changes in profile after mentoplasty, examining its main indications, benefits and surgical techniques involved as reported in scientific literature. Methodology: The present was a narrative review carried out with advanced searches in PubMed, COCHRANE, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Scopus. Documents which covered surgical techniques, design, facial movement magnitude, possible complications of patients subjected to mentoplasty, observational studies, experimental and integrative, chin changes due to cephalometry or soft tissue changes published in Spanish and English during the past ten years. Additionally, type of mentoplasty, treatment indications, techniques and possible complications were study variables. Conclusion: Mentoplasty is an aesthetic facial procedure which modifies significantly harmony and proportions of the lower third of the face. The assessed patients experimented notable improvements of the chin´s projection and contour which contributed to a more balanced appearance and aesthetically more agreeable. Keywords: Mentoplasty, clinical changes, imaging changes, facial profile.
