| dc.description | Introduction: Coffee consumption was linked to negative health outcomes but there is evidence of preventive effects on cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objective: To search, compare and summarize the evidence of the effect of consumption of regular coffee in the prevention of cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: Literature review of articles obtained from Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus and Science Direct, published in English or Spanish, manually complemented with references from the cited articles. Results: A literature review of 12 scientific articles was carried out, including meta-analysis, cohort studies and cross-sectional observational studies focused on the beneficial effects of coffee consumption in the diabetic population. It inhibits the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase that regulates glucose levels and reduces arterial stiffness, which is associated with a lower risk of cerebrovascular disease and cardiovascular mortality. Conclusion: Coffee contains vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which may be related to its cardiovascular benefits in patients with type 2 diabetes. It was evident from the review that consumption of three to seven cups per day seems to be a preventive factor for diabetic patients in relation to the development of cardiovascular outcomes, however, further research is required to confirm and understand this association. | en-US |
| pt-BR |
