Abstract
Given the importance of protecting watersheds for water conservation, it is necessary to know the value of this resource and their recovery. For that reason, this review article is focusing on expanding the concept of System Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) for water resources in watersheds, as a mechanism to prevent forest degradation and deforestation. For this, we use technical concepts in which the importance of high Andean forest protection, regulation and provision of water resources in a watershed is demonstrated. Additionally, some case studies from different countries in Latin America are shown, in order to show the challenges they met. From the information found some recommendations for the use of this instrument in the future are generated and to contribute to sustainable forest use and maintenance of water resources.
