In contemporary biology, species and other biological taxa are considered lineages resulting from concrete and contingent evolutionary processes, which leads to thinking that they are individual entities and not classes. Fully understanding this idea requires arduous epistemological reflections that include the review of theses and ways of thinking consecrated by the philosophical tradition or maintained over time. The idea that species and other taxa are individuals is a consequence of Darwin’s evolutionary perspective, which still guides the development of the life sciences today. Admitting this vision implies complex discussions that have a privileged place on the agenda of current philosophy of biology and are the subject of this work.
