Background: Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) poses a significant health concern for individuals traversing high-altitude environments, prompting varied approaches to its mitigation. Purpose: This narrative review delves into the indigenous use of coca leaves by South American populations as a traditional remedy for AMS, juxtaposing it against contemporary allopathic treatments. Study design: International research on the metabolites of coca leaves and their potential correlation with AMS is synthesized, with a focus on understanding the biochemical intricacies of the plant. Methods: A comprehensive review of literature spanning both traditional indigenous knowledge and modern scientific studies is conducted to explore the therapeutic potential of coca leaves in managing AMS. Results: The examination reveals promising connections between the metabolites present in coca leaves and potential alleviation of AMS symptoms, shedding light on its alternative treatment viability. Conclusion: Coca leaves emerge as a potentially effective alternative treatment for AMS, warranting further investigation and consideration in the context of high-altitude travel and mountaineering.
