Cognitions are a subclass of the registers that a living being has of the adjustment and functional appropriateness of its own states, of its position in the environment, and of the patterns that guide its behavioral reactions to those states and positions. Considering this, sentience can be defined as a set of cognitive registers that the living being has of its internal states and that allow it to react behaviorally to these states; and this shows the attributions of sentience as hypotheses that are subject to observational control. We can attribute a sentential register to a certain living being, to the extent that we can also attribute to it behavioral reactions that can be understood as responses guided by that cognition. Finally, it should be clear that the paper aims at a conceptual elucidation of the notion of sentience and not at an empirical determination of the taxa to which such a faculty can be attributed.en-US
