Abstract

Introduction: ulcerative diseases are risks factors for the infection with human immunodeficiency virus. The most common cause of genital ulcers is Herpes simplex virus specially type 2, which is considered to be a biologic cofactor in the acquisition and transmission of HIV. Objectives: to determine the prevalence of Herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 in patients with HIV infection from four health institutions in Bogotá. Methods: serologies for IgG for Herpes simplex type 1 and 2 were performed to each patient and information was recorded in a questionnaire. Results: a total of 110 patients were included in the study, 88 men and 22 women. The prevalence for Herpes simplex type 1 was 95% and for herpes simplex type 2 was 60%. 85% of the patients denied any history of genital disease. Discussion: in African and north American countries prevalence for Herpes simplex virus is reported as high as 70% in patients with HIV infection. In our country there is no data about the prevalence of this virus in patients infected with HIV. Many studies report that most of the patients with positive serologies for herpes virus denie any history of genital disease. The seroprevalence obtained in our study is similar to those reported in the literature. As other authors describe, most of our patients denied history of genital herpes. Conclusions: we report the first data existing in our country describing the prevalence of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 in patients infected with HIV
