People with Diabetes Mellitus who benefit from a pharmacological treatment, are exposed to hypoglycemic episodes, and may develop fear to those episodes; also, they may engage in avoidance behaviors that affect treatment adherence. Given that hypoglycemia and anxiety share some symptoms, the person with diabetes must develop interoceptive consciousness to identify the physiological cues of both states, differentiate one from another, as well to establish coping behaviors fitted to their needs. A program to help patients with diabetes to develop interoceptive consciousness was designed and validated. This program comprises a psychoeducational component, and the adaptation of the emotional consciousness module and distress tolerance module from the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders created by David Barlow.
