Colombia. Año 2023 – 2024(2024-07) Bedoya González, Henry Alonso; Andrés Felipe, Mejía MedinaHIV infection has historically been a chronic condition of significant epidemiological importance, subject to multiple strategies in prevention, diagnosis, management, and monitoring. Once established, the infection has a high impact on morbidity and mortality, necessitating constant and specific pharmacological therapies to improve the quality and life expectancy of individuals living with the infection. However, many factors influence both transmission and the adherence to and maintenance of treatment. For instance, in the realm of prevention, lack of awareness about the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a crucial factor, due to pharmacological adverse effects, the impact on associated healthcare costs, and the social stigma of taking antiretrovirals. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new innovative strategies that leverage the high penetration of digital technologies, known as digital health or eHealth (via mobile applications), to help reduce the probability of transmission through proper access, use, and monitoring of PrEP, with minimal risk of complications and adverse effects, while clearly and effectively evaluating adherence. Finally, it is important to emphasize that the information gathered through these technological means provides a reliable basis for healthcare providers, physicians, and governmental entities to make informed decisions that positively impact PrEP users.
