Resumen
Propósito: Investigar y describir el comportamiento de las criptomonedas y las acciones de FIAT durante la pandemia de COVID-19, con el fin de ver si las criptomonedas son una moneda de refugio viable para combatir una crisis económica global. Diseño / metodología / enfoque: Esta investigación es de carácter cuantitativo-descriptivo y se creó una base de datos de los datos de precios de 8 acciones diferentes de FIAT y alternativas, y criptomonedas de los años 2019 a 2021 (desde que comenzó la pandemia de COVID-19, hasta el momento actual) para ver cómo se vieron afectadas por las ramificaciones económicas de la pandemia de COVID-19. Las acciones de FIAT y las criptomonedas se eligieron en función de su volumen de trading mensual promedio porque cuanto mayor sea el volumen de trading, mayor será la volatilidad y los cambios de precio. Todos los datos provienen de fuentes disponibles públicamente y plataformas comerciales reales. Hallazgos: The central finding of this investigation was that cryptocurrencies are not just a viable safe haven currency to mitigate one’s losses during an economic crisis, but that cryptocurrencies also have had a higher rate of return than FIAT stocks have had, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Limitaciones / implicaciones de la investigación: Hubo dos limitaciones principales para esta investigación. En primer lugar, la selección de datos, hay más de 10,000 criptomonedas diferentes que se pueden comprar, y más de 50 bolsas de valores principales diferentes en el mundo, cada una con una selección de miles de acciones diferentes, lo que dificulta la selección de solo 8 acciones FIAT y alternativas y criptomonedas. La otra limitación principal se basa en el diseño de la investigación en sí, debido a que esta investigación es de carácter descriptivo-cuantitativo, los datos no se pudieron utilizar para modelos correlacionales con el fin de comparar y contrastar las acciones FIAT y las criptomonedas y ver cuál funcionaba mejor.

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate and describe the behavior of cryptocurrencies and FIAT stocks during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to see if cryptocurrencies are a viable safe-haven currency to combat a global economic crisis. Design / methodology / approach: This research is of a quantitative-descriptive nature. I created a database of the price data from 8 different FIAT and alternative stocks, and cryptocurrencies from the years 2019 to 2021 (from when the COVID-19 pandemic began, until current time) in order to see how they were affected by the economic ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic. The FIAT stocks and cryptocurrencies were chosen based on their average monthly trading volume because the higher the trading volume, the more volatility and price changes would occur. All of the data came from publicly available sources and real trading platforms. Findings: The central finding of this investigation was that cryptocurrencies are not just a viable safe haven currency to mitigate one’s losses during an economic crisis, but that cryptocurrencies also have had a higher rate of return than FIAT stocks have had during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research limitations / implications: There were two main limitations for this investigation. Firstly the data selection, there are over 10,000 different cryptocurrencies that can be purchased, and over 50 different major stock exchanges in the world each with a selection of thousands of different stocks making it difficult to narrow down a selection of just 8 FIAT and alternative stocks and cryptocurrencies. The other main limitation is based on the design of the investigation itself, because this investigation is of a descriptive-quantitative nature, the data could not be used for correlational models in order to compare and contrast the FIAT stocks and cryptocurrencies and see which performed better.
